Summary:
Dora has been worrying for years about the bay, strange things are happening, fish where they shouldn’t be and salmon not appearing at all. She is finding it difficult to keep the place going and her hands are arthritic so she can’t work on the engines. The storm hits and it is like nothing they have ever seen. It rips off rooves and fences and in the morning she goes down to the beach and sees piles of old whale bones that have been buried for a hundred of year, littering the beach. Dora sees what must be done, the bay must be protected along with it’s history. She starts writing letters to politicians, scientists and businessmen, anyone she could think of, she sent hundreds of them. For months she kept sending letter, photos of Blueback kept arriving at newspaper offices, she kept at it and finally outlasted them all. Abel gets a fax to tell him the bay has been declared a sanctuary, a marine park where everything is protected by law. They pack and go home, on the way Abel dreams his mother dies, he thinks about her and says that he has always wanted to learn about the sea went away and studied the sea, lectured about the sea and all the time his mother knows more than anyone. She’s part if the bay that’s how she knows it, and on her own she has saved the bay. Stella tells him he had to go away but now they are going back.
