Summary:
When Abel turned thirteen he had to go away to school and live in a hostel, On his last day at home he planned to swim with Blueback but the ocean was wild and tormented. Waves smashed against the jetty and the rocks. Macka’s abalone boat lay on it’s trailer neglected. He stops at the peppermint tree to say goodbye to his father and leaves a piece of white coral there. His mother is packing the truck and his thought is “I will wither up and die away from this place.” He didn’t but he didn’t like the town and the noise and the people everywhere. He worked hard and did well at school, but he dreamed of home and at night he dreamt of Blueback. His mother wrote him letters with shells and coral and things.
